   Jet fuel

Jet Fuel  Full Industry Breakdown

Jet fuel is a specialized aviation turbine fuel designed for gas-turbine engines used in commercial aircraft, cargo aircraft, military jets, helicopters, and certain UAV turbine platforms. Jet fuel is optimized for high energy density, low freezing temperature, stable combustion, and safe storage and transport.

Main Civil Aviation Jet Fuel Types

Jet A (Primarily United States)

Primary Use: United States commercial aviation

Freezing Point: -40°C

Flash Point: Minimum 38°C

Key Features:

Standard U.S. commercial aviation fuel

Kerosene-based fuel

Slightly higher freezing point than Jet A-1

Jet A-1 (Global Standard)

Primary Use: Worldwide – Europe, Middle East, Asia, Africa

Freezing Point: -47°C

Flash Point: Minimum 38°C

Key Features:

Global aviation standard fuel

Lower freezing point allows safer long-haul flights

Anti-static additives typically included

Jet B (Cold Weather Aviation Fuel)

Primary Use: Extremely cold climates

Freezing Point: Approximately -60°C

Key Features:

Wide-cut fuel (blend of kerosene and gasoline)

Higher volatility than Jet A / Jet A-1

Used in Arctic and sub-Arctic operations

Military Jet Fuel Types

JP-5 (Naval Aviation Fuel)

Primary Use: Aircraft carriers and naval aviation

Key Features:

Higher flash point for increased safety onboard ships

Designed specifically for naval aviation operations

JP-8 (Primary NATO Military Jet Fuel)

Primary Use: NATO and U.S. military aviation

Equivalent To: Modified Jet A-1 with additives

Key Features:

Contains anti-icing additives

Contains corrosion inhibitors

Used in multi-climate global military operations

Global Market Reality

Most Commercial Demand: Jet A-1 (Approximately 90% of global aviation fuel usage)

Most Military Demand: JP-8

Specialized Use: Jet B (extreme cold regions), JP-5 (naval aviation only)

Typical Jet Fuel Technical Properties

Energy Density: ~43 MJ/kg

Density: ~0.80 kg/L

Sulfur Content: Ultra-low sulfur for environmental compliance

Color: Clear to straw

Flash Point: Minimum 55°C

Water Content: Max 200 mg/kg

Applications:

Modern passenger vehicles

Commercial trucking fleets

Power generation systems

Industrial machinery

Standards: EN 590 (Europe), ASTM D975 (USA)

Low Sulfur Diesel (LSD)

Low sulfur diesel is used in regions where ultra-low sulfur infrastructure is still transitioning.

Sulfur Content: ≤ 500 PPM

Cetane Index: 45 – 50

Density: 820 – 860 kg/m³

High Sulfur Diesel / Industrial Diesel

Sulfur Content: 1000 PPM – 5000 PPM

Cetane Index: 40 – 48

Higher lubricity and energy density

Applications:

Marine engines

Industrial boilers

Mining and heavy construction equipment

Remote power plants

European Diesel Grades (Market Reference)
